California's barrage of left-wing bills is as bad as you think

California's flurry of legislation highlights some of the worst ideas liberals have to offer, including the ones that even some local Democrats aren't willing to sign.

A bill written by state Sen. Scott Wiener, one of the most destructive progressive lawmakers in the state, would turn California into a "sanctuary state" for parents to put their children through irreversible gender transitions. California cannot provide reliable electricity for its own residents or address the highest poverty rate in the country, but at least parents from across America will be able to have their children chemically castrated and surgically mutilated in the name of gender ideology. That bill is awaiting Gov. Gavin Newsom's signature.

State legislators also sent a bill to Newsom's desk that would make COVID-19 information that differs from the "contemporary scientific consensus" illegal for doctors as a form of "unprofessional conduct." Given how regularly the "contemporary scientific consensus" was wrong during the pandemic, and how the "scientific" consensus was often the liberal political consensus, this bill would be a grotesque infringement on the First Amendment and would further solidify the decay of the public health bureaucracy.

Finally, there is the bill that even California Democrats couldn't reach an agreement on. The proposal would stop any notifications to Immigration and Customs Enforcement when an illegal immigrant is arrested in the state, even for violent criminals who are in the country illegally. The Democratic supermajority (which needs no Republican votes) fell three votes short of passing this dangerous escalation of its already dangerous sanctuary state status.

State Sen. Sydney Kamlager accused her Democratic colleagues who opposed the bill of doing so "because of a fear of brown people," in case you're wondering about the state of political discourse in California's legislature.

That bill had been floated last year, but it wasn't brought up for a vote. That it happened now suggests that the Democrats thought it could get through, meaning it is likely one or two years away from becoming a reality. Wiener's bill to cut parents out of the decision-making process for allowing their children to get COVID-19 vaccines was also shelved due to a lack of support.

We're close but a couple votes short on our teen vaccine bill (SB 866) on the Assembly floor. We're thus moving the bill to inactive.

The anti-vaxxer harassment campaign worked this time, at the expense of teen health. We lost this round but aren't going anywhere.

California Democrats have been emboldened to move further and further to the left because they know voters will support them regardless. That means that California can fall further into liberal decay, with Wiener and Kamlager showing us what exactly is on the horizon. California Democrats are in a race to the bottom with no end in sight, and they're winning. Everyone else in the state is losing.
