With 2022 more than halfway over, gamers can begin to look forward to the major releases set for Fall and the Holiday season this year. There are a lot of popular franchises releasing new mainline entries towards the end of 2022, including Pokemon, Bayonetta, and as tradition would indicate, this year will also be capped off by a new Call of Duty title. Similarly to 2019's entry into the iconic shooter franchise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 marks Activision's second remaster of the Infinity Ward games. With an October release date fast approaching, more details are slowly being discovered about the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Rather than these details being officially unveiled by Activision, however, a Call of Duty leaker known as TheGhostOfHope on Twitter has reported that there are internal ideas among both the game's developer and publisher that the iconic maps from the original Modern Warfare 2 will be coming to the remake by 2023. While 2009's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is full of franchise-defining maps, including Rust and Terminal, it has been expected that not all of these will be available in Modern Warfare 2's remake.

According to TheGhostOfHope, however, the plan is currently for all the original Modern Warfare 2 maps to come as part of the year two planned content for the remake. This will likely be an attempt by Activision to give Call of Duty fans something new in 2023, as it doesn't seem they will be getting a new entry in the franchise at the time of writing. As well as the old maps from the original game, 2022's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will have its own original multiplayer maps.

Some of these maps look interesting and unique, such as Modern Warfare 2's Marina Bay Grand Prix, which features a live Formula 1 race while players are shooting one another. However, for many Call of Duty fans, no matter what the new maps look like, they won't compare to the classic experiences that Rust and Terminal can provide.

Already, it seems like some of the old Modern Warfare 2 maps like Intervention will be returning when the remake releases, but it is likely that a lot of the classic arenas will be saved for whenever Activision is planning to release them as additional content. There is some potential for this to be officially confirmed or denied at Activision's upcoming showcase for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2, which is set to take place later on in September.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches October 28 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
