There are few things greater in life than taking a long camping trip during a North Dakota summer. This is a chance to spend quality time with your family as you can explore during the day and lay under the shining stars at night. If you have never been camping before, then this is the year to do it, and if you don't know where to go, then we have you covered.

We have composed a list of some of the best campsites in North Dakota, along with a few tips that will make your trip safe and productive. Consider trying one or all of these campsites when you get the chance. You will not be disappointed!

Before you head out on your epic camping trip, it is important to research ahead of time so you can learn about the area and the measures you should take to stay safe and avoid travel disasters. For starters, you will need to be smart about what you pack. Look at the weather forecast ahead of time and dress accordingly for the weather. Also, make sure that you protect yourself against germs and the elements by packing hand sanitizer, sunscreen, bug spray, and any necessary medications.

If you need to take a long road trip to get to your campground, then you will want to take the time to have your car checked out before hitting the highway. If you are not automobile-savvy, then bring your vehicle to a mechanic and ensure that the tires are inflated, all fluids are filled, and your battery and engine are in good working condition. Once you get on the road, make sure that you know the local laws and adhere to the posted speed limits.

While the wilderness is a wonderful place, there are some potential dangers that you will want to recognize and plan for to stay out of trouble. For instance, you will want to pack accordingly and know how to react if a tick latches onto one of the campers. Failure to remove a tick could result in fever and body aches, so you will want to react right away by using tweezers to pull the body of the tick up and out and then apply rubbing alcohol to clean the area. Check for ticks regularly during your trip.

Camping Tip: It's always a good idea to bring a headlamp, glow in the dark camping compass and adventure first aid kit. But, most important - don't forget the S'Mores Kit!

There are 191 North Dakota RV Parks & Campgrounds. North Dakota has 13 state parks that all offer camping along with their unique scenic beauty and fun outdoor activities like hiking, biking, swimming, and boating.

North Dakota State Park campsites and seasonal lodging can be booked 95 days in advance from the date you wish to stay. Reservations can be made online or by phone. Check-in at the North Dakota State Parks is at 4:00 pm on the first day of the reservation and checkout is at 3:00 pm on the last day of the reservation.

Now that you know how to be safe and the type of camping available in North Dakota here are the five campgrounds that you must visit in The Peace Garden State:

One of the most sought-after camping locations is Medora Campgrounds on the west side of Medora, ND. This is always a highly-rated destination because of the amazing views and the chance to camp in a tent or in one of their famous cabins. Their real claim to fame is their Conestoga Wagons, which are comfy little rooms where you can sleep, eat, and play family card games all inside of what looks like an old-fashioned covered wagon!

Covered wagons are subject to availability, but they must not be missed. If you can be flexible with your travel plans, then you are sure to find one available at some point during the year.

If you are looking for a destination with plenty of charm and tons of recreational activities, then plan your next adventure at the Jamestown Campground. In addition to the gorgeous campsites and hookups for RVs, there is a ton of fun to be had for the whole family, including playgrounds, horseshoe courts, nature trails, and outdoor games. There is also an awesome camp store where you can buy great souvenirs and replenish your supplies.

Located in Epping, ND, Lewis & Clark State Park is steeped in history, and it is a great place to experience fun on land and at sea. With gorgeous forests and a view of the North Dakota Badlands, there is plenty to see and behold and plenty of opportunities to see thriving plants and animals.

This is also the perfect campground if you enjoy fishing because the waters are famous for their abundance of walleye and northern pike that can make for a tasty dinner around the campfire. There are also many clean and inviting beaches that allow you to relax under a warm sun.

If you love to see plants and animals thrive in their natural habitat, then take a trip to Cavalier, ND, and visit their Icelandic State Park. This is a great campground that offers fun all year long due to the opportunities to hike, swim, and go snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

There is also a 200-acre nature preserve with many different breeds of birds and furry creatures that you can discover, and there are plants that you may have never seen before. There is also plenty of water for fishing and swimming. Plus, there is even room to take the boat for a spin.

If you really want to enjoy the glory of North Dakota, then take the time to visit the town of Medora and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. This is the place where President Roosevelt came to hunt bison in 1883, and it has been a historical destination ever since. This site offers chances for standard camping or RV adventures. It also has hundreds of paths for walking or biking, and you can pitch a tent almost anywhere. This campsite is located in the badlands, which present miles of natural beauty that you need to see to believe.

If you visit, a highlight are the Cannonball Concretions Pullout. This geological oddity in the North Unit-"cannonball"-shaped boulders called concretions were formed when sand grains from an ancient river become cemented together by minerals. It's a fun photo opp and lesson in history & geology.

As you can see, there are many amazing campgrounds throughout the amazing state of North Dakota. Whether you prefer North Dakota State Parks camping or a more remote camping experience, there are so many beautiful campsites to explore. Try to visit any one of these gorgeous places this summer. You won't be disappointed.
