Plymouth Argyle have completed the signing of striker Sam Cosgrove on a season-long loan from Championship club Birmingham City.

The Pilgrims' transfer deadline day recruit will be available for selection for the away League One game against Derby County at Pride Park on Saturday.

The 25-year-old has made three substitute appearances for Birmingham this season, most recently in 2-0 defeat away to Rotherham United last weekend.

Cosgrove joined Birmingham for a reported £2 million from Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen in January 2021 but the move to St Andrews has not worked out.

He has not scored a goal in two starts and 13 substitute appearances for the Blues, and had loan spells in League One last season with Shrewsbury Town and AFC Wimbledon.

Cosgrove becomes Argyle manager Steven Schumacher's seventh signing of the summer transfer window, and the fifth on a season-long loan.

The other four of those are Finn Azaz (Aston Villa), Nigel Lonwijk (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Bali Mumba (Norwich City) and Morgan Whittaker (Swansea City).

Schumacher also brought in Matt Butcher and Mickel Miller on permanent deals, from Accrington Stanley and Rotherham United respectively.

Miller is now a long-term absentee due to a thigh injury which he suffered the day before the 2022/23 season began at the end of July.
