Yorkshire Tea was invented in the 1970s specifically for the water of Yorkshire, says expert

Yorkshire Tea, the most popular brand in the UK, was originally blended to be enjoyed with the local hard water for maximum taste, an expert has revealed. Suzy Garraghan, the firm's senior tea buyer, said: "Yorkshire Tea was invented in the 1970s specifically for the water of Yorkshire.

"The whole business is built on doing things properly. So blending tea for different water types. And, obviously, Yorkshire being the biggest county in England, it was really important to make the best tasting cup of tea that fitted Yorkshire water.

"Then people started to take it on holiday and we developed this really loyal following.

"But I think, again, on the idea of properness, people tasted their tea and their water and really liked it. We grew quite unexpectedly."
