A nine-year-old Filipino-Australian boy died from dengue fever while visiting his extended family in the Philippines.
His family is now raising funds through GoFundMe for his memorial.
The dengue victim, Glenn Pulgadas, was reportedly bitten by a mosquito and began experiencing symptoms on August 12. He was then admitted to the Madonna and Child Hospital in the country.
According to his family, Glenn suffered from high fever, headaches, abdominal pain, vomiting, and nose bleeds after infection.
The child reportedly experienced dengue shock syndrome which led to acute organ failure. The disease typically includes clamminess, a rapid weak pulse, and narrowing of pulse pressure.
The nine-year-old boy died on August 25.
Glenn was described as a "bright and bubbly boy" by his family.
"Glenn was a bright, bubbly, young boy who was so full of life and always had a smile on his face," said family friend Danielle Zarzycki who started the GoFundMe on behalf of Glenn's mother Rizza Dianne Pulgadas.
The family came from the small Western Australian town of Harvey. The boy was a year three student at St Anne's School in the town.
On Tuesday (Aug 30), the Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported a total of 118,785 cases from January 1 to August 13, a 143% increase in dengue cases compared to the same period in 2021.
Most dengue cases were reported from Region 3 with 21,247 (18%), followed by Region 7 and National Capital Region with 11,390 (10%) and 11,064 (9%), respectively.
NCR, in particular, is showing an increasing trend of dengue cases from July 17 to August 13, 2022.
Meanwhile, the dengue death toll in the country has reached 40.
