Step 7: With these tips, your bread will stay fresh longer

If you are able to follow these 6 ways, your bread will always stay fresh for a longer period.

How to repurpose stale bread

Bread begins to go bad as soon as it is taken out of the oven due to starch retrogradation. Even while homemade bread can be kept fresh for several days if stored properly, there are a few uses for the baked goods once they go bad:

French toast

French toast is made from stale bread slices which are drenched in custard and cooked till golden and crispy. Because French toast is firm enough to keep its shape after being soaked in the custard mixture, stale bread is best used to make them.

Homemade breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs are made by grinding dried bread into tiny particles. You can break your stale bread into bits and add them to a blender to turn them into breadcrumbs.

Croutons

You may use your stale bread to make homemade croutons if it is soft enough to cut into cubes. Slice the crusty bread into cubes, add a little salt and olive oil, and bake at 325 degrees Fahrenheit until crisp and golden.

When you want to defrost the bread, simply heat it in the microwave, oven or toaster.

Place the portions of bread in the freezer.

NB: Avoid storing your bread in the refrigerator. The bread may stale 3 times more quickly as a result of this than it would if it were kept at room temperature. This is simply called retrogradation. Retrogradation is when the starch molecules crystallise and the bread becomes tough.

You can also make your bread last longer by freezing it. To do this, separate the bread into small portions in plastic bags. Slices should be taken in pairs and stored in separate bags. Make sure there is no air left within each bag before you seal it tight. Keep every bag in a separate plastic bag. Your bread will stay fresh longer thanks to the separate, airtight bags, which also shield it from excess moisture and bacteria.

You can also store the bread in the fridge. Both homemade and store-bought bread can be stored using this procedure. Bread that has been frozen keeps its starch from recrystallizing and deteriorating. The best way to store bread is to freeze it if you have more than you can eat within a couple of days.

Tip: If your bread is homemade or comes unsliced, you might want to slice it first before freezing it. In this manner, you may avoid slicing it while it is frozen or thawed as it can be challenging.

Always keep bread away from light and heat. Aim for 68 °F (20 °C) at room temperature when storing it. The bread should be left exposed on the counter after baking until it is put away for the night. This allows the bread to air out.

To keep your bread fresh longer, always keep it tightly packed in a plastic bag. If the bread you purchased at a store comes in paper packaging, throw it away and wrap it in plastic wrap or aluminium foil to store it. Keep plastic-wrapped, processed bread that has been cut into slices in its original package. This aids in the bread's natural moisture retention. To keep it as fresh as possible, store it overnight in a breadbox. A breadbox offers the ideal amount of ventilation to keep your bread moist and crispy on the outside.

Just be careful not to overfill the breadbox. If you overfill it, the humidity will rise and your bread can become mushy.

Tip: If you wrap your bread in a paper bag, don't keep it in a breadbox. This might result in too much moisture, which ruins the crust. Instead, wrap it with aluminium foil.
