Energy leads as ASX up 0.4pct at noon

The ASX's energy sector was up 1.7 per cent at noon, making it the ASX's biggest gainer.

The Australian share market has clawed back a bit of Monday's losses, with every sector except mining and health care gaining ground.

At noon on Tuesday, the S&P/ASX200 index was up 29.4 points, or 0.42 per cent, to 6994.1. The broader All Ordinaries was up 30.2 points, or 0.42 per cent, to 7223.6.

The energy sector was the biggest gainer, up 1.7 per cent as Woodside rose a similar amount after posting a fourfold increase in profit for the first half of 2022, to $1.8 billion.

"Our first results since the completion of the merger with BHP's petroleum business highlight the increased financial and operational strength delivered by our larger, geographically diverse portfolio of high-quality operating assets," chief executive Meg O'Neill said.  

Coalminer Whitehaven's shares had cracked $8 for the first time, rising 1.8 per cent to $8.10, while New Hope was up 2.4 per cent to $5.12. 

Emerging uranium producer Paladin Energy was up 6.5 per cent amid talk of Japan turning to more nuclear power.

The heavyweight mining sector was down 0.2 per cent, with BHP falling 0.8 per cent to $41.84 and Rio Tinto down 0.6 per cent to $95.71. But Fortescue was up 0.3 per cent to $18.94.

IGO was up 1.9 per cent to $12.905 after the nickel-lithium miner announced record underlying earnings of $717 million.

The big banks were higher, with ANZ up the most, by 1.3 per cent.

The Australian dollar at noon was buying 68.82 US cents, from 68.55 US cents at Monday's close.
