A man fell approximately 200 feet to his death on Friday while he was hiking on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, according to park authorities.

The 44-year-old, who has not been identified, was hiking at about 3:30 p.m. on Friday when he fell from the rim just west of the Bright Angel Point Trail, the National Park Service shared in a statement.

Park rangers responded to the call and located the male's body. The National Park Service shared that the hiker went off the trail when he fell from the edge.

An investigation into his fall is being conducted by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office.

The National Park Service encouraged visitors to stay safe and only use designated trails while also staying at least six feet from the rim's edge. It was also advised that hikers refrain from running, jumping, or performing any other physical stunts when near the rim.

"In areas where there is a railing or fence, do not climb over the barrier," the National Park Service said in the news release. "Keep an eye on all the people in your group, especially small children. Make sure that your travel companions have both feet firmly planted on pavement or developed trails."
