Chester Upland superintendent and receiver: 'We're energetic'

As Chester-Upland School District prepares to ring its first day bell Monday, its leadership intends to create an equitable environment where success is the only outcome. The superintendent, Dr. Craig L. Parkinson, called himself, a former high school principal, and Receiver Nafis Nichols, a former Chester city councilman, two "wild cards." "We come in and we're energetic," he said. "We're two people who are just so passionate and so dedicated ... I tell you, maybe in our first five to 10 minutes of conversation Receiver Nichols and I had was our motto was, 'Failure is not an option.' "

Christopher Barbuto, 40, is charged with drug delivery resulting in death, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, and related offenses. He is being held at Chester County Prison on $300,000 bail set by Magisterial District Justice James Kovaleski.

$500,000 state grant to help clean up Pottstown Plating site

The effort to restore the former Pottstown Plating Works building at the corner of South Washington Street and Industrial Highway received a $500,000 boost from the state. Well, not quite $500,000. The official amount is $467,636 issued from the Industrial Sites Reuse Program of the state's Department of Community and Economic Development to be used for the site at 125 S. Washington St. and was issued to the Montgomery County Redevelopment Authority. The formal vote by the redevelopment authority board to move forward will occur on Sept. 8, said Peggy Lee-Clark, executive director of Pottstown Area Economic Development and a longtime champion for the project.

A Philadelphia man who police say shot and injured himself during a domestic-related disturbance at an Upper Merion hotel has been sent to state prison for illegally possessing the weapon. Hector Luis Lopez III, 29, of the 3800 block of North Franklin Street, was sentenced in Montgomery County Court to 6 to 12 years in a state correctional facility after he pleaded guilty to charges of person not to possess a firearm and terroristic threats in connection with an Aug. 27, 2020, incident at the Hyatt Place hotel in the King of Prussia section of Upper Merion.

Parent: Phillies looking to avoid another September swoon

The Phillies finally lost Sunday, and to one of those subservient teams well into their annual tanking itinerary. Consider that, at least for now, an anomoly. Baseball is, of course, structured to be competed over the long haul, with enough competitive balance to offer every team's fans a more than occasional chance to revel in the thrill of victory. Then there are long-ago powers such as the Pittsburgh Pirates (who have starting pitcher Roansy Contreras to thank for a 5-0 win Sunday at Citizens Bank Park) and Cincinnati Reds, who would rather sell and annually rebuild than try to compete.

Unselfish and prolific, Daniel Gazdag at heart of Union's success

In the best of times, and the Philadelphia Union have had some good times of late, the responsibility of taking penalty kicks can be fraught. There's a hierarchy, based on who earned the penalty, who is best at converting them, who is on the field at any given time, plus a stew of interpersonal dynamics and unwritten rules. But it's imperfect and left to the discretion of players, who are adults - adults whose end-of-year salary negotiations are affected by the number in the goal column.
