Australian singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin arrived on the Fairway main stage as we reached the festival grounds an hour or two after the earliest bands played. She's a lovely artist and the languid, moody sound of her indie folk and alt-country songs fit the slow pace of the sweltering sunshiny day.

Because yes, it was hot, hot, hot, a fact that likely contributed to the light attendance during the daylight hours.

Around the time Jacklin finished her set the Ying Yang Twins bounced onto the Back Nine stage at the other end of the grounds. Their energetic rapping drew a decent crowd singing along on songs such as "Ms. New Booty" and "Shake."

Yves Tumor brought the most unusual sounds of the mid-afternoon to the main stage, performing a set of experimental hard rock. He was dressed for the heat, too, wearing a unitard and a bedazzled thong above over-the-knee shiny black boots.

Fans staked out spots in the mostly rare shade on the grounds, conserving their energy for night when the reunion of Le Tigre was set to lead into a headlining performance by LCD Soundsystem.
