Aug. 27-NORTH COVENTRY - It's been a long 2 1/2 years.
It was March 2020 when COVID-19 shut down schools, businesses, churches and most of life as we knew it. It's been a long, quiet, 2 1/2 years for the Coventry Singers as well.
In Pottstown, live music has returned, and in the nick of time. The Coventry Singers will join in harmony again in time to celebrate their 50th Anniversary. After an unwanted and extended break, the group is reorganizing and reconvening under the direction of Cheryl Markofski.
No stranger to the Singers, Markofski led the choir for several years after founder Joseph Hoover retired. She is a graduate of Florida State University with a Master of Music degree, and has done graduate work in voice performance at the University of Texas. She taught music in the Owen J. Roberts Middle School, and is a noted soloist and voice coach.
New to the Coventry Singers this year is accompanist Eleanor Lundy. She began playing the piano by ear in early childhood. She has taught piano and served churches in New England and eastern Pennsylvania for many years as a choir director and organist. She is a graduate of Rosemont College.
New and returning musicians are welcome to join in song. Rehearsals are Monday evenings at 6:30 at Cedarville United Methodist Church in Pottstown, starting Aug. 29. No auditions are necessary for returning members. Auditions for new members will be held at 6 p.m. on Aug. 29, and Sept. 12. Those who wish to audition do not need to prepare a piece, auditions will consist of general vocalization and simple sight reading.
The 50th Anniversary Christmas concert will be held Sunday, Dec. 4, at Cedarville United Methodist Church.
