Good Trouble: 10 Best Relationships From The Show

Spoiler alert: This article contains spoilers for seasons 1-4 of Good Trouble. Good Trouble was recently renewed for its fifth season at Freeform and Hulu, according to Variety. Initially centered around foster sisters Callie and Mariana Adams-Foster, the impressive cast continues to evolve, as the series highlights groundbreaking storylines and compelling relationships, which often mimic the "chosen family" feeling of the show's predecessor, The Fosters.

Throughout the series, the residents of The Coterie fight for humanitarian causes, including gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, Black Lives Matter and, most recently, the unhoused crisis in Los Angeles. As the main characters navigate these challenges as well as personal dilemmas and career setbacks, their romantic relationships and friendships continue to grow, and the best ones deserve to be celebrated.

When Mariana revealed the pay inequality for women at tech firm Speckulate, three of her female co-workers, Rachel, Gina, and Claire walked out with her, and they called themselves The Fight Club Girls (or FCGs for short). Their friendship and partnership had a shaky start, but discovering each other's strengths and weaknesses helped the women grow closer.

Rachel, Gina, and Claire felt betrayed after they learned about Mariana's affair with their former boss Evan Speck. But Mariana slowly regained their trust, and the women recently launched their shopping app called Bulk Beauty. Their company is still in its early stages, and so is their friendship, as they learn how to support each other.

When Luca is trying to figure out if he wants to take a DNA test to find his potential family members, Malika and Mariana share their stories about reconnecting with their biological parents after spending time in foster care. The trio bond over being former foster kids, and Malika also shares her experiences of homelessness with Luca, which is why he finally agrees to stay at The Coterie.

As Luca continues to connect with the residents of The Coterie and goes on a journey to search for his biological family members, he will be able to turn to his new friends Malika and Mariana for emotional support, since they have been through similar experiences.

Luca was used to going unnoticed. So when Davia catches him perfectly performing her dance routine, she encourages him to audition for a burlesque group. The pair shared incredible chemistry on stage and were able to support each other through deep issues, like Davia's body dysmorphia and Luca's hesitation to accept help as an unhoused person.

As Davia and Luca get to know each other better, it will be interesting to see if they stay friends, or take their relationship to the next level. Davia played an integral part in convincing Luca to stay at The Coterie, even if it didn't work out well at first. Now that Luca is starting to settle in and open up more, it will be interesting to see his relationship with Davia develop, while he searches for his family.

Mariana has a complicated romantic history, which goes back to her time on The Fosters. While she generally goes for a "bad boy" type, she is also drawn to men she can't have. When Joaquin moved into The Coterie, Mariana was attracted to his edgy mystique.

As a reporter, Joaquin knows how to get information, but he also knows how to keep a secret. After Mariana's sister Callie moves away to Washington D.C., Joaquin slowly begins to open up to Mariana about his own search for his sister Jenna. Between Joaquin's connections and Mariana's computer skills, they became an impressive pair of detectives and a beautiful couple.

Alice and Sumi have taken a long and winding road to end up in the relationship they have now. Although Sumi was not the best girlfriend early on in Good Trouble, her friendship with Alice more than made up for it. As Alice took her time coming out to her parents, Sumi supported her, and her dream to become a professional comedian.

The dynamics between the pair have changed a lot over the years. Still, whenever they can spend quality time together, (like when they planned the Chinese New Year celebration at The Coterie), their pure happiness is undeniable. Like many couples, they don't work well together professionally, but Alice and Sumi's close bond will likely last for many years.

Davia hasn't had the best luck at love (aside from her former co-worker Matt), and many people, including her Coterie mates, believe deep down she is still in love with Dennis. Sparks fly whenever they sing together, but their deeply complicated history makes it hard to root for them to get back together.

Davia and Dennis have seen each other through some of the darkest times of their lives. Although their romance was brief, as friends, they're able to give and receive honest criticism, and helpful advice about their careers and other relationships. However, their relationship will never reach its full potential, until they can openly discuss their feelings for each other.

When Isabella's one-night stand with Gael turned into a nine-month (and lifelong) commitment, she moved back into The Coterie to be close to the baby's father. Although she was looked at as a villain before, her pregnancy showed her softer, more vulnerable side.

Isabella didn't want to interfere with Gael's relationship with Callie, and she was happy raising her child with Gael as platonic co-parents. After Callie and Gael broke up, the friendship between Gael and Isabella grew, and they eventually started dating. By gradually building trust, and taking time to develop a true partnership, the couple has become one of the healthiest romantic relationships on the show.

From The Fosters to Good Trouble, Callie and Mariana have been through a lot together. They didn't always like each other, but the love they felt as sisters kept them close for 10 years. Even though they didn't see eye-to-eye when it came to a work-life balance or their finances, and they occasionally had feelings for the same guy, the petty arguments Callie and Mariana had couldn't break their bond.

Since Callie left to work for the ACLU in Washington D.C., it's been interesting to watch Mariana grow without her sister, and lean on new friends, like Joaquin and Luca. Not even distance could keep these sisters apart, and the Good Trouble creators mentioned Callie will be back when the actress, Maia Mitchell, is ready to return, hopefully in the upcoming fifth season.

Whenever Davia or Gael needs encouragement to follow their dreams or advice about a relationship, they are always there for one another, cheering each other on. Although they try to put on a brave face, they are two of the most sensitive people on the show, and their compassion for one another is heartwarming.

The pair really connected when Davia asked Gael to teach art in an after-school program set up at the last school where she taught. It was obvious that Gael was also meant to be a teacher since he shared Davia's caring nature towards her students. When Gael becomes a father, it will be interesting to watch Davia babysit.

The foundation of Alice and Malika's friendship is trust, honesty, loyalty, and compassion. Throughout the series, they have consoled each other through their lowest moments and celebrated each other's victories. When Alice had a big audition, she skipped it to help free Malika from jail, and when Alice left the Margaret Cho comedy tour early, Malika helped her work through her trauma.

They have always leaned on each other, but their origin story explains why the two are so close. It was recently revealed that when Malika was homeless just a few years ago, Alice took her in. She put up a wall and gave Malika part of her room, which is why Malika's loft is smaller than the others. Alice gave Malika a chance, and Malika gave Alice a friendship that will last a lifetime.
