A popular Texas swim hole will close for the rest of the year because of the drought.

The Hays County Parks Department announced on Facebook Thursday that it will close Jacob's Well, where water levels remain exceedingly low.

The county shut down the well last month after it ran dry for the fifth time in recorded history.

Significant rainfall is still needed to recharge the Trinity Aquifer, which supplies Jacob's Well, the department said.

Much of Texas is experiencing severe, extreme or exceptional drought conditions thanks to a combination of a mostly rain-free summer and sweltering temperatures.

Hays County, where the spring lies, is experiencing exceptional drought, the most severe classification. This week's downpour did not appear to provide much long-term relief, according to data from the U.S. Drought Monitor.

One of the state's most beloved natural swim holes, Jacob's Well is the second-largest fully submerged cave in Texas and maintains a cool 68 degrees year-round. The spring is surrounded by 81 acres of parkland, just northwest of Wimberley in Hill Country.

Jacob's Well also closed earlier this summer because of high bacteria levels, pollutants and poor visibility, which made swimming dangerous.

The park will remain open for hiking and other outdoor activities.
