The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) of President João Lourenço won the general elections held on Wednesday with 51.7 percent of the votes, after the counting of 97.03 percent of the votes, according to the latest update from the National Electoral Commission (CNE).

The MPLA, which started as favorite, has obtained about 3,163,000 votes, obtaining 124 seats out of the 220 that make up the National Assembly, which means the loss of about twenty deputies with respect to the previous legislature. In spite of this, it has a sufficient majority to elect Lourenço as the new president for the next five years.

For its part, the main opposition party, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), after winning 44.5 percent of the votes, has won 90 seats, almost 40 more than those achieved in the 2017 elections.

UNITA has been the big winner in Luanda with 62.59 percent of the votes against 33 percent achieved by the MPLA, which has blamed these results in the capital on the high abstention registered, around 54 percent.

Likewise, UNITA has announced this Thursday that it will accept the result of the elections and for this reason it has mobilized all its militants and voters "to avoid situations that disturb public order and tranquility".

Although the following candidates have obtained residual results, all of them have improved their figures with respect to the previous elections. The Social Renewal Party (PRS) will keep its two deputies in the Assembly, while the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA) adds one more and the newcomer Humanist Party of Angola (PHA) enters the Assembly with two seats.

The big loser of the elections has been the coalition Broad Convergence for the Salvation of Angola (CASA-CE), which will not be represented in the Assembly, after having had 16 deputies in the previous legislature.

The National Patriotic Alliance (APN) and the National Party for Justice in Angola (P-NJANGO) will also not be represented in the revalidation of the mandate of President Lourenço, whose party has monopolized the politics of the African country since its independence from Portugal back in 1975.

The electoral and security authorities have coincided in pointing out that the electoral day has passed without any major problems, highlighting the "civism" shown by the voters at all times.
