Willy Wonka's incredible contraption probably springs to mind when thinking about glass elevators but now London's has one of its own that's about to open to the public. The fantasy is set to become a reality as Battersea Power Station's new LIFT 109 has started accepting pre-registration for those keen to be among the first to try out the 109m viewing platform.
One of the flagship elements of the new Battersea Power Station redevelopment scheme, LIFT 109 sits within one of the iconic chimneys that have been such a recognisable element of the London skyline for decades. The glass viewing platform at the peak of the lift is set to offer thrill-seekers unblemished 360 degree views of the capital, with hopes the lift could rival attractions like the London Eye after it opens.
The lift has been in construction for some time but now a new website has appeared online offering pre-sale ticket registration and dubbing LIFT 109 'London's epic new viewing experience'. The website claims the lift will open in Autumn 2022, but does not give an exact date.

When it does open, guests will begin their trip up the chimney with a tour of the power station's historic Turbine Hall A, now refitted to contain a fascinating exhibition of artefacts and information detailing the history of the great building.
Alluding to the subsequent elevator experience, the website promises 'constellations of lights' that will 'guide your elevator experience up to new heights', suggesting the lift experience itself will be far from a straightforward up and down.
Battersea Power Station's redevelopment started back in 2012 when the building was sold, and is set to finally open later this year with a whole host of new luxury homes, shops, cafés, offices and over 19 acres of public space.
The new development has also attracted new infrastructure, with Transport for London extending the Northern line on the London Underground with a new branch to Battersea Power Station that will serve the residential and commercial hub.
