A brush fire near the Sudbury Reservoir broke out Tuesday morning in Marlborough.

MARLBOROUGH, MA - A new brush fire broke out Tuesday in Marlborough, burning about two acres in a hard-to-reach area near the Sudbury Reservoir.

The fire broke out Tuesday morning, and the first firefighters on scene had to hike far into the woods to reach the blaze. Firefighters from Southborough, Sudbury, the Department of Conservation and Recreation and Marlborough later used boats to reach the fire.

The fire was extinguished by about 3:30 p.m., and the Marlborough Fire Department said a fire at a campsite was likely the cause.

"This fire was likely caused due to an unattended or poorly extinguished camp fire. Residents are asked not to burn with our current extreme drought conditions. Several serious brush fires continue to burn across our state," the department said.

The fire came just before state officials banned open fires in state parks. The state made that decision after fires burned close to 200 acres in the state in recent days amid a severe drought in the state.

A fire in Marlborough was part of that 200-acre tally. A brush fire in the 615-acre Desert Natural Area Conservation Land burned 25 acres over the weekend.
