Burger King is giving away free plant-based and vegan burgers on Thursday to celebrate National Burger Day and to encourage the UK to "have a bit more flex".
According to the fast-food chain, 66 per cent of customers would be reluctant to try a plant-based or vegan burger while 51% of meat eaters said they wouldn't try a plant-based burger even if it was free.
In an attempt to change their minds this National Burger Day, Burger King is giving away 10,000 plant-based Whoppers and Vegan Royales for free as part of its Whopper Swapper deal.
To claim their free burger on National Burger Day (Thursday, August 25), customers need to use the Burger King app, which is available on the App Store and Google Play Store.
Simply add the item to your order, select a participating restaurant, and check out. There is no minimum purchase required, but free burgers are limited to one per customer.
While the aim of this initiative is to persuade meat-eaters to give plant-based burgers a go, vegetarians and vegans can also make the most of this opportunity.
However, vegans should be aware that, while the Plant-Based Whopper is plant-based, it's cooked on the same broiler as the original Whopper and therefore cannot be classified as vegan. The Vegan Royale, on the other hand, is safe for vegans to eat.
And if any meat eaters are tempted to switch to plant-based burgers in the future, they won't be short of options.
Burger King plans to go 50 per cent meat free by 2030, following the launch of its first meat-free restaurant with a pilot takeover at the Leicester Square flagship earlier this year.
A number of fast-food chains offer vegan burgers, including McDonald's with its McPlant, and KFC's vegan "chicken" burger.
