Summertime is officially in full swing, which means one thing - it's peach season!  Here in West Michigan, we are lucky to have an abundance of fresh Michigan peaches.  If you're looking for the best places to find them or wondering when the peak season is, you've come to the right place.  We'll also give you tips on picking the perfect peach! Read on for all the info you need on picking fresh peaches on the west side of the state.  Happy peach picking!

The sweet, juicy taste of a fresh peach is one of the highlights of summer.  So when is the best time to pick a fresh peach in Michigan?  The answer may surprise you - it depends on the variety of peach you're looking for!  For instance, if you're hoping to find white peach varieties, the best time to pick them is typically from mid-July to early August.  On the other hand, if you're looking for a yellow peach, the peak season is usually from late July to early September. Red Haven peaches, a Freestone variety, usually ripen mid to late August. To be sure, always call the farm before heading out to pick.

Here are some tips to help you know when your peaches may be ready to pick from your backyard peach tree.  Peaches typically ripen from late July to early September in Michigan.  To determine if a peach is ripe, gently squeeze it.  If it yields to pressure, it's ready to eat.  You can also check for ripeness by looking at the color of the fruit.  Ripe peaches will be a deep yellow or orange color.  Finally, give the peach a sniff.  Ripe peaches will have a sweet, fragrant aroma.  With these tips, head to your backyard or local farm and enjoy some delicious Michigan peaches!

Now that you know when to pick your peaches, where can you find them?  Many different u-pick farms in Michigan grow peaches, so it shouldn't be too difficult to find a place to pick them!  However, if you're looking for a specific variety of peach, you may want to call ahead to the farm before making the trip.

If you're looking for the freshest peaches, there's no better place to find them than at a pick-your-own farm.  Not only will you enjoy the fruits of your labor, but you'll also experience the wonderful outdoors and maybe even meet some new friends.  Many apple orchards in West Michigan can also serve as peach orchards, so if the apple is your other favorite fruit, be sure to find an orchard that will allow you to pick both. Picking fresh produce is excellent for having good, clean family fun!

Try searching online or asking your local farmers' market to find a pick-your-own farm near you.  Once you've found a farm, call them to find out when their peach season starts and ends.

Peaches are a summertime staple, and there's nothing quite like biting into a ripe, juicy peach.  However, picking the perfect peach can be tricky.  Here are a few tips to help you select the best fruit.

Ripe peaches will have a deep red or pink color and should yield to gentle pressure.  Avoid peaches that are bruised or have mushy spots, as these may be over-ripe.  To get the freshest peaches, look for ones still attached to the stem.  The stem itself should be green and fresh-looking. Sniff the peach - it should have a sweet fragrance.  If it doesn't smell ripe, it probably isn't.

Once you've found the perfect peach, enjoy it as soon as possible for the best flavor.

When it comes to picking peaches, timing is everything.  Start thinking about those great peach recipes in early July, so you'll be ready! And with these tips, you now know when and where to pick fresh peaches in Michigan.  Be sure to enjoy them while they're in season! Well, what are you waiting for?  Get out there and start picking!
