NEW YORK CITY - New Yorkers who forgot their umbrellas Monday morning likely will regret it.
Drenching rain is expected throughout the day, and could come with thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service's forecast.
The forecast calls for an 80 percent chance of precipitation starting in the morning, with rainfall amounts as much as 1 inch.
"The chance for rain then lingers much of the day," the weather service's New York office tweeted.
A hazardous weather outlook will be in effect through the evening, according to the National Weather Service.
The meteorological culprit as a warm front moves north into the area, where it will meet another slow-moving weather trough from the west, the outlook states.
"There is the potential for heavy rainfall associated with showers and isolated thunderstorms this morning, and isolated flash flooding will be possible across the area," according to the outlook.
Rain could linger into Tuesday, which carries a 50 percent chance of precipitation, the forecast states.
