Aug. 21-The Lake Metroparks Farmpark challenged guests to solve a Corn Field Maze during its grand opening.

Visitors from all around came to test navigation skills at the park located at 8800 Euclid Chardon Rd in Kirtland to explore the Corn Field Maze on August 20-21 during the grand opening.

Andy McGovern, events manager for Lake Metroparks Farmpark, said that each year the Corn Field Maze would feature a unique theme, with previous years offering a pirate theme or an alien aesthetic. This year the Farmpark departed from the themes, choosing instead to the make this maze the most challenging yet.

The Corn Maze features a number of sharp 90-degree turns and several dead ends throughout the 3.5 acres of maze to test the skills of intrepid guests.

"We are super excited to have this Corn Field Maze open, this year is our most intricate yet and it is sure to keep people on their toes as they try to find their way through," McGovern said. "Here at the farmpark our main goal has always been educating people in a fun interactive way and I believe our Corn Field Maze displays that very well."

Originally the park set aside this weekend to showcase a Sunflower Harvest weekend; however, due to unforeseen drought, the project was set aside while the employees worked to build the maze in place of the event, due to the corn's natural resistance to drought, he said.

The Corn Field Maze will run through until mid October when the Farmpark will be preparing for a Haunted Hay ride and other events. But although the maze will end, the park will be putting the crop to good use.

"In November and December we will actually dry out the corn and grind it down into feed to give to our animals," McGovern said. "It will last us year-round and it's a neat little way to take care of our animals after the event has ended."

Admission to the Corn Field Maze costs $8 per guest, with special deals for children and seniors, the Farmpark is open 7 days a week from 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m.
