Helicopters will operate around the Breakheart Reservation in Saugus through much of Sunday afternoon.

SAUGUS, MA - National Guard helicopters were scheduled to join the fight against fires in the Breakheart Reservation in Saugus and Wakefield on Sunday, dropping water as the flames burn into a sixth day in the region.

The operations were scheduled to begin at 11 a.m and continue through 4 p.m., according to the Wakefield Police, using Walsh Field at Wakefield Memorial High School as a landing zone. The Saugus Firefighters Local 1003 explained that helicopters would be drawing water from Sluice Pond in Lynn.

Fires have been burning at the Breakheart Reservation since Tuesday, bathing area communities in smoke and drawing firefighters from across the region.

These fires come amid a historic summer season in Massachusetts, where a number of large fires have scorched tracts of land in Townsend, Rockport, Lynn, Natick and Marlborough, among other locations.

The National Guard was previously involved in the fire response in Rockport last week, helping crews finally contain flames there in recent days.

Already busy in Saugus, state and federal resources have shifted somewhat in recent days to further bolster firefighting efforts at the Breakheart Reservation.
