Aug. 19-As summer is coming to a close with the return of school and cooler weather, Lorain County Metro Parks isn't quite ready to call it quits.
The Parks service is set to host an end of summer "Sunset Beach Fest" at Lorain's Lakeview Park from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 20 that is free and open to the public.
Mariah Deitz, public information officer for Lorain Metro Parks, said the plans for the event came out of a similar one that used to be held.
"This beach fest is a reimagined version of paddle and peddle fest that used to occur at the lake, but with more activities for the end of summer," Deitz said.
The event will have free beach games, family activities, food, beer for purchase and live music courtesy of Latin Jazz Players.
"We wanted to build a friendly, good-hearted atmosphere for the community to come together and enjoy summer while its still here before we head into the fall season," Deitz said.
Free paddleboards, kayaks and canoes will be available to try, but require pre-registration.
Children ages 5 to 12 are welcome to try canoes with an adult.
Youngsters ages 13-17 are allowed to try canoes and other paddle activities with either an on-shore or participating adult.
"We wanted to give people a chance to try some things they've never tried before, and without the costs that sometimes come with it," Deitz said.
Officials at the Metro Parks asks that those who are planning to consume alcohol, to do so responsibly.
No one is allowed to operate paddle craft while consuming alcohol.
Alcohol is only available for purchase for those 21 and older and must provide a legal identification card with purchase.
In the event of rain, the water activities will be canceled, but the games and s'mores will move inside to the building at the beach.
Popcorn will available.
