Sean Schemmel, the voice of Goku in Funimation's English dub of Dragon Ball, recently answered a question that pop culture enthusiasts have asked for decades: who would win in a fight, Son Goku or Superman?

The topic was addressed in an interview that Schemmel conducted with IGN, which came on the heels of Fortnite's collaboration with the Dragon Ball franchise where Goku, as well as Vegeta, Bulma and Beerus, were added as playable characters. In the interview, Schemmel gave an explanation of why Goku would most likely be the victor in a showdown with DC's titan.

"Goku is a God," Schemmel explained. "There's two scenarios where this would occur: if Earth is not in trouble, Goku would ask Superman to get close to the sun and get {as} charged up as possible, and then he'd fight him. But if Earth was in danger, he'd fight him as long as he could, but then, probably, if he wasn't having any success, he would probably just Instant Transmission Superman to a planet without a yellow sun - and then he would lose all his powers and Goku would win."

Schemmel went on to clarify that that was a short explanation of how the battle would unfold, hinting that he could lay out a more in-depth, scientific explanation if he chose to.

"That's the short version. I can talk to you about how I read a scientific article about how Superman's only vulnerable to magic and kryptonite and thatGoku's energy that comes out of his hands is technically plasma and Superman would be unaffected by plasma energy, which is probably true. So again, there's a much longer answer."

In the end, Schemmel's explanation accounted not only for the strength of the two super powered fighters, but also for the individual advantages that their distinct abilities would give them. Goku also unquestionably demonstrates the powers of a god in the currently ongoing Dragon Ball Super manga series with his "Ultra Instinct" form, a transformation often associated with the divine. This form, which Goku first used in his battle with Jiren during the "Universe Survival" saga, grants the user superb defensive abilities and allows them to react automatically to oncoming threats, a trait that would help Goku immensely in a battle with Superman. Dragon Ball Super is currently in the middle of its "Granolah the Survivor" arc, which so far has had Goku utilize the more stabilized black-haired version of his Ultra Instinct form. The manga is available in English from VIZ Media.
