Electric convertibles remain a rarity in today's market. US customers are limited to GMC's Hummer EV with the removable infinity roof, or they can hope the Mini Cooper SE convertible enters production sooner rather than later. Tesla also hinted at a revamped Tesla Roadster in 2021, though the exact timeframe for the roadster's return has been delayed and remains unclear.

Top-down driving enthusiasts may be in luck. Following the Polestar O2 concept debut in March, Polestar has confirmed the convertible concept will become a production vehicle known as the Polestar 6. The official launch date is still some time away, but Polestar says you can expect a production-ready hard-top electric roadster by 2026.

The roadster retains Polestar's signature square body style and will be built on the company's proprietary aluminum chassis platform. With 884 hp and 663 lb-ft of torque, the dual electric motor roadster will share its 800-volt architecture with the upcoming Polestar 5 sedan. This means the roadster should have a more powerful rear motor, creating a rear-bias driving feel. Polestar claims the model will target a sprint from 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds and achieve a top speed of 155 mph.

Citing the original concept launch in Los Angeles, 500 of the Polestar 6 models created will be a special edition, called the Polestar 6 LA Concept variant. These units will be built to an identical specification, with a sky blue exterior, light leather interior, and the original O2 concept 21-inch wheels.

Early images show a minimalistic interior with a large center-console-mounted tablet and a two-spoke steering wheel. Range, infotainment, and navigation data appear to be displayed on this tablet while driving data appears on a single, smaller screen mounted behind the steering wheel.

Those hoping to catch a glimpse of the O2 concept will get a chance this weekend during Monterey Car Week, where the vehicle will be on display at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Polestar says to expect full specifications, pricing, and other information as we get closer to the official launch in 2026.

That's a long time to wait if you crave an EV convertible, though eager buyers can reserve a build slot through Polestar's website starting today. Despite the 2026 launch year, Polestar may enter the EV convertible market at a relatively evergreen moment, especially at the level of performance the company has quoted. Up against models like Tesla's Roadster and the incoming wave of EV sedans, it seems Polestar is set to be a competitive manufacturer across the automotive market, from sedans to convertibles and crossovers.
