Aug. 10-Bands perform

Redwood Empire Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1872 is hosting an event Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Eureka Veterans Memorial Building, 1018 H St., Eureka.

Oxygen Destroyer and Echoes of Ruination will be performing at this 21-and-older gathering. Veterans get $1 off on drinks (cash only). For more information, call 206-348-9335.

Bear River trip

The Redwood Region Audubon Society will present a free guided field trip with Ken Burton to Bear River Ridge on Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Those attending will explore the high ridge between the Eel and Bear river valleys and can expect to see a mix of forest and grassland species. There may also be a chance to visit the Bear River valley.

Prepare for high afternoon temperatures and come with food and water since there are no facilities. Walking will be minimal.

Marsh trip

The Redwood Region Audubon Society will present a free guided field trip at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

Bring binoculars and meet trip leader Larry Karsteadt at the end of South I Street (Klopp Lake) in Arcata for a morning offering incredible views of Humboldt Bay, easy-to-walk trails and a great diversity of birdlife.

Birding tour

The Redwood Region Audubon Society will offer a free guided birding tour at Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge on Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m.

Meet leader Ralph Bucher at the refuge's Visitor Center for this two-mile walk along a wide, flat trail that is packed gravel and easily accessible. Email Ralph Bucher to sign up at thebook@reninet.com.

Weekly bingo

Bingo games are played every Tuesday at the Moose Lodge, 4328 Campton Road, Eureka. Doors open at 5 p.m. and games start at 6 p.m. A snack bar is available.

Gyros to go

The Eureka Emblem Club will present "Gyros to Go" Aug. 21. Greek orzo salad and ouzo cake are also included in this fundraising meal.

The cost for the meal is $18, pre-paid by Aug. 18. Mail checks to Eureka Emblem, P.O. Box 3507, Eureka, CA 95502. Make sure to include phone number with each order.

Kayak trip

The Redwood Region Audubon Society, in partnership with local guiding company Kayak Trinidad, will present a morning trip to view local seabirds from a kayak on Aug. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Everyone will ply the waters of Trinidad Bay with professional kayak guides seeking out marbled murrelets (juveniles, too), pigeon guillemots, common murres, black oystercatchers and more.

All kayaks and gear will be provided. Space is limited and reservations are required. The cost for this trip is $109 per person. Call Kayak Trinidad at 707-329-0085 to reserve a spot on this seabirding adventure.

Book signing

A book signing for Lelia Moskowitz's book "Growland" and Kathy Wollenberg's "Far Less" novel will take place Oct. 1 starting at 4 p.m. at Septentrio Winery, 650 Sixth St, Arcata. Everyone is welcome to meet the authors and enjoy wine and appetizers.
