Choosing the best place to stay in any new destination always starts with location. Getting your hotel location right will save time, effort and frustration during your visit to Sedona. Yes, Sedona is a small city, but booking a hotel in town vs out of town will make a big difference to most visitors.

Here are the 5 popular areas you can stay in and around Sedona, Arizona:

It will come as no surprise that Uptown is the most expensive place to stay in Sedona. Uptown has the best location for accessing most attractions, it has the best shopping and it has plenty of eateries.

West Sedona is a fantastic compromise. You get a prime location with plenty of places to eat nearby, plus you will save money on hotels vs Uptown. Oak Creek Canyon offers more primitive and outdoors orientated lodging close to town.

The Village of Oak Creek and Cottonwood offer cheaper hotels but they are further out from the popular landmarks and trails in Sedona. However, they do have benefits of their own.

Note: We will cover each Sedona area in great detail later in this guide, including things to do, distances from major attractions and best hotels.

It's safe to assume that most visitors to Sedona are going to be hiking at least some trails. We were in town to hike as many trails as possible and our biggest frustration was getting parked at trailheads. You simply must be up early and parked before sunrise at many of the popular trails.

West Sedona is our personal top pick for where to stay in Sedona because it has easy access to most of the heavily trafficked hikes in town, including Devils Bridge Trail, Soldier Pass Trail and Boynton Canyon Trail to Subway Cave, plus hotels are cheaper on average when compared to Uptown Sedona.

Every minute counts in the morning to grab a coveted trailhead parking spot. Staying in West Sedona allows you to set a later alarm, grab a coffee and be at a trailhead by sunrise more easily than all other areas around Sedona. But most crucially, staying in West Sedona saves money versus Uptown.

However, not everyone is in Sedona to hike. It is important to figure out the priorities for your visit and look at hotels in a certain area based on what you want to get out of your trip.

What are your travel goals? Are you here to take on the best hiking trails in Sedona? Or do you want to take a DIY wine tasting tour through some of the best wineries in Sedona?

Whether you are in Sedona for hiking, drinking wine, photography, food or simply to put your feet up, narrowing your hotel search down to suitable areas is exactly how to make the best possible start in this process.
