The Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Finance are on different pages about increases to the budget to secure the police's operations.

The finance ministry is the midst of budget proposals for the 2023 fiscal year this week.

On Thursday, the Ministry of Finance proposed that the funding level of the police should be increased by 17.5 million euros next year. The Ministry of the Interior, on the other hand, proposes an increase of 42 million euros.

Negotiating official Antti Karila from the Ministry of Interior first told news agency STT that if the funding levels for the police remain this low in the budget, it would lead to personnel reductions in the police.

He later specified that the Ministry of the Interior is indeed getting the 17.5 million euros it needs for police expenses, but needs additional funding for ICT and property expenses.

Karila added that he fears the funding shortfall could be reflected in the use of police human resources.
