a close up of a street: A Georgia deputy died after a tree fell onto his cruiser over the weekend, police said.

A Georgia deputy with more than two decades of law enforcement experience was killed when a tree toppled over and onto his car over the weekend.

Spalding County Deputy Sheriff Jamie Reynolds was driving eastbound on Georgia Highway 16 on Sunday when the tragedy occurred around 5:30 a.m. Sheriff Darrell Dix in a news release said a large pine crushed the passenger compartment of the cruiser, killing Reynolds instantly.

He was pronounced dead on the scene.

"He was a great guy who loved his family, had a deep faith, worked hard, and always brought you solutions, not problems," Dix said.

Reynolds began his law enforcement career in 1995, and he joined the Spalding County Sheriff's Office in 2021. He most recently served with the Office of Professional Standards, which oversees state certification, national accreditation and grant writing. Reynolds also worked weekend shifts at the local jail.

"The Spalding County Sheriff's Office will be working with Jamie's family, supporting them, and walking through this with them over the next few days. We will continue to do so from this point forward," Dix said.

"Every prayer, call, text and post is appreciated. We ask that you keep Jamie's family and his extended Spalding County Sheriff's Office family in your prayers as well in the coming days."

Reynolds is survived by his wife and children
