The United States Navy's amphibious assault ship, the USS Kearsarge, is scheduled to arrive in Helsinki on Friday for a three-day visit, according to the Finnish Navy.

The 257 metre-long Wasp class warship will be carrying around 2,000 members of the US Navy and Marines, and berth in Helsinki's Hernesaari Harbour.

However, the vessel will not be open to the public.

After the visit, the assault ship will head to the region of Hanko, Finland's southern-most mainland point, and Uppiniemi to continue exercises with the Finnish Navy.

The aim of the drills is to develop interoperability and compatibility between the military troops of both countries, "as well as Finland's ability to provide host nation support," the Finnish Navy said in a statement.

The exercises will involve troops and vessels from Finland's Navy Command, Nyland Brigade, Coastal Brigade, and Coastal Fleet.

The Finnish Navy noted that the training will involve "significant water traffic and air activity and will cause air noise in the Hankoniemi and Upinniemi areas every day during the exercise."

The drills in the Northern Baltic Sea are scheduled to be held on 8-19 August.

Pirkanmaa helicopter drills on Wednesday

Meanwhile, the US Army Aviation Branch and the UK's Royal Air Force combat helicopters are participating in joint drills with Finland in the Pirkanmaa region on Wednesday.

The exercises were to be presented to members of the media at Tampere Airport.

The exercises are being led by the commander of Finland's special forces helicopter battalion at the Utti Jaeger Regiment, Jaakko Kauppinen.

The US unit, which arrived in Pirkanmaa a couple of weeks ago, includes around 40 troops, two CH-47 Chinook helicopters and two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.

The British training unit has around 30 members and two CH-47 Chinook helicopters.

The helicopter drills will continue until the end of next week.
