People's enthusiasm for donating money and goods to help Ukrainians fleeing their war-torn country has declined, according to Vassili Goutsoul, chair of the Ukrainian Association in Finland.

Goutsoul said donations began to decline in June, compared to the spring.

So far, the Ukrainian Association in Finland has raised around 280,000 euros for victims of the war.

"Most of that sum came before May. We're very grateful for the monetary donations, but they have decreased," he said.

Volunteer leader from Joensuu, Hannu Vähäkoski has organised trips to deliver humanitarian aid donations to Ukraine since March, just after Russia invaded Ukraine. However, he has also noticed a decrease in enthusiasm for volunteering towards the effort.

"In the spring our group had up to 500 volunteers, now there are 30 of us," Vähäkoski, who's nickname is Hané, explained.

At the time of publication of this article on Sunday, Vähäkoski was on the way to Ukraine with an aid delivery that was organised by his grassroots group, Hané Peace Ukraine.

The shipment from Joensuu will bring 25 tonnes of food, thousands of kilograms of consumables and two SUVs to the war-torn country.

"This is our fourth trip, and possibly our last. Without financial assistance, the operation cannot continue," Vähäkoski explained.

Both he and Goutsoul attributed the decline in donations and volunteerism to the drawn-out nature of the deadly conflict. Months of news about the war has numbed many to the plight that still faces Ukrainians under attack.

Goutsoul said that even though there are fewer volunteers showing up than in the first months of the war, the operation has still been able to continue.
