Negotiations concerning the financially-strapped German energy company Uniper, a subsidiary of Finnish majority state-owned energy firm Fortum, are approaching a solution, according to various media outlets.

The Finnish government, German government, Uniper and Fortum have been involved in negotiations and discussions about potential bailout solutions since last week.

Germany may acquire a stake up to 30 percent in Uniper, in a bailout package worth billions of euros, according to international media conglomerate Bloomberg and German newspaper Handelsblatt.

Handelsblatt reported that according to its insider sources, the German government is considering a bailout totaling 5-10 billion euros.

The final size of the rescue package depends on how much the German government allows gas companies to pass on Uniper's added costs to customers.

Earlier this month, a law was drafted in Germany which allows cost shifting, but it has not yet been implemented.

According to Reuters' sources, the German government is prepared to accept possible price rises for consumers as part of the rescue plan.

The various media outlets estimate that the negotiations will conclude in the next few days, as Reuters says that the deadline is 25 July-the date by which Uniper's money is feared to run out. The German gas importer's losses are currently running into tens of millions per day.

A spokesman for the German Ministry of Economy did not comment on the media reports to Reuters, but said the German government is urgently negotiating a solution for Uniper and is in contact with all parties.

Yle's sources confirmed that efforts are now being made to resolve the Uniper issue in Germany and there are no known negotiations regarding Finland. The matter is being monitored by Prime Minister Sanna Marin (SDP) and Tytti Tuppurainen (SDP), Minister for Ownership Steering.

On Tuesday, during committee questions, Tuppurainen said that Fortum would no longer invest in its subsidiary Uniper.

Fortum acquired a majority share in the German energy giant in 2019. Currently Fortum has a 78 percent stake in Uniper.
