Alex Kenyon brings ability and an excellent attitude to the Chester FC squad, says manager Calum McIntyre.
The 29-year-old defensive midfielder has signed a one-year deal having impressed on trial.
He played more than 250 games for Morecambe after joining them in 2013, including 24 appearances in the 2020/21 season when they won promotion through the League Two play-offs. He moved to Scunthorpe last summer but finished the season with Ayr after joining them on loan in March.
McIntyre said: "Alex has had a really good career and you see the way people at Morecambe speak about him. He didn't have a great time at Scunthorpe, then circumstances meant in terms of the transfer window that he had to go north of the border. Last season didn't really get going for him.
"We were after a certain type of midfielder. We wanted someone who would want to play as a defensive midfielder, someone older than we already had, and a leader. He ticks all those boxes. He has been brilliant.
"I think the biggest testament to his character is he came in on trial. He absolutely had no issues with that. It was, 'no problem, I'll come in and show what I am all about, on and off the pitch'.
"A lot of players with his background will have felt, 'I have played this many Football League games so why aren't you just going to sign me?'
"He is popular with the lads, a good character and has a good relationship with the staff already. His experience will be important for us.
"I don't see him as a midfielder that is going to score goals. I see him as someone that will be part of the defensive structure and organisation on the pitch. I am really pleased to have got someone with his experience, but someone with his personality probably first and foremost."
