The number of people subject to quarantine notices has soared by more than 600, with Queensland likely to top 100 cases on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Queensland recorded its highest daily COVID-19 tally of 86 new cases, amid warnings the state would have thousands of new cases a day in just weeks.

Health authorities have noted the state's positive cases continue to double, with numbers possibly reaching 100 on Wednesday.

Chief Health Officer John Gerrard said Tuesday's increase in cases was in line with the expected trend of cases doubling every 48 hours, while there were 61 confirmed cases of Omicron in the state.

The rise in cases comes as Deputy Premier Steven Miles announced that quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated close contacts of a positive case would drop from 14 to seven days' isolation.

The change would help reduce the impact on people and businesses, Mr Miles said, with the halving expected to see Queenslanders resuming their lives and getting back to work quicker.

On Tuesday afternoon, there were 4687 people subject to quarantine notices, but by Wednesday morning, that number had soared to 5297.

The highest number of cases was in Brisbane's north region at more than 2200, followed by the Gold Coast, at more than 1000 people.

But while the relaxation of quarantine requirements was welcomed, many businesses fear being shut down by positive cases, with the isolation methods taking staff off the ground for even seven days expected to have extreme financial disruption.

Businesses following the COVID vaccination mandates have faced abusive anti-vaxxers and have struggled after JobKeeper and further financial payments were shut off by federal and state governments.

There have been calls from Restaurant and Catering Australia for the government to give crippled businesses a boost with payments for owners and their workers to prevent further losses after a positive case attends their venue.

Meanwhile, more than 100 cases are currently under investigation.
