Finland has reduced carbon emissions but not quickly enough, according to a fresh environmental report from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The OECD's Environmental Performance Review for Finland 2021 found that while the Nordic country is known for being a leader in environmental policies and ambitious goals, it is not "not fully on track" to meet those goals.

"Greenhouse gas emissions fell in the last decade, but they need to decline at a much faster pace to meet the target. Waste generation, material consumption and nutrient losses to water bodies have continued to rise. Agriculture and a large forestry sector exert pressures on the country's biodiversity," a summary about the report stated.

The new report is the OECD's third review of Finland, which found that its agricultural and forestry sectors put excessive pressure on the country's biodiversity.

Implement the plans

It also said that instead of continuing "good strategy making," Finland should implement those plans.

The report found that even though Finland has created a strategy to reach a goal of being carbon neutral by the year 2035, concrete measures toward that end are lacking.

In terms of consumption, the report said that the amount of waste is increasing, despite the fact that the opposite trend should be happening.

Regarding an economic recovery from the Covid crisis, the report said Finland needs to make decisions about incentives that steer the economy towards a sustainable, greener direction, making investments along the way to a green economy.

The report said that Finland is too reliant on private cars, noting that companies should phase out vehicle subsidies and stop offering free parking to their employees.

Additionally, the report suggested that Finland should allot more space on the roads to public transport.
