APN talks to historian Oula Silvennoinen about the discovery of a far-right terror plot by a group of small town men. The group has been linked to an accelerationist strand of thinking within radical white supremacist ideology.

"What we see all across the continent is valid here in Finland as well. We have far-right movements with the same talking points repeated everywhere with the same kinds of outcomes," Silvennoinen said.

He also noted that Finland has seen its share of terror attempts, including a planned 2014 attack on the University of Helsinki. Silvennoinen highlighted the difficulty authorities face in catching terrorists before it's too late.

"We've seen how extremely difficult it is to find these lone wolf actors that don't necessarily signal their plans. We've seen failures in this country as well in the form of school shootings," he explained.

Look no further

Politicians and think-tanks alike continue to raise the alarm about Finland's need to attract foreign labour to shore up the workforce.

APN talks to Ana Maria Limma who works with employment services in the central Finnish city of Jyväskylä. She suggested Finland home in on helping immigrants who are already in the country.

"A lot has been done in attracting [foreigners], but as for the retention part, there is a lot of work still to do," she told APN. "We have to think the other way around, maybe it's not necessary to bring more, maybe we already have the people who are ready to study further or even change careers."
