The University of Tampere announced on Monday that 107 of its employees will be made redundant following the conclusion of co-determination negotiations with staff representatives.

In a statement, the university said that the affected employees would be able to choose a severance package if they wish and that they will also be provided with adjustment support.

Some 39 people had already chosen severance package options since the co-determination talks were announced in September, which had an effect on the overall number of people losing their jobs. Meanwhile, 27 people opted to accept a voluntary retirement package being offered.

As a result of the negotiations, which the university said were caused by financial and operational factors, 81 people will be offered new support service positions at the university, which includes administrative-, library- and IT-related jobs.

The university said it planned to partially outsource some of its financial, payroll, sales invoicing and travel management services to the accounting services firm Certia, starting from next year. This change affected 46 employees.

Initially, up to 200 people faced redundancy as the university sought to save 14 million euros annually, with negotiations affecting the roles of a total of 1,100 workers.

The university added that some support service roles may change significantly as a result of the negotiations.
