With the Polestar 2 already out and the 3 on the way, it was time for Polestar to pick a number for the production version of the Precept concept car. The next logical number would have been "4", but the all-electric, low-volume division of Volvo and Geely has decided to skip that number and go with "5" for their next car. It's billed as an "electric performance 4-door Grand Tourer set to be launched in 2024."
Polestar has given us this new image of the upcoming 5 (at top) and has stated it's close to the look of the production version. While the overall fastback design is still there, gone are the squared up and sharp body lines. They're replaced with smooth, flowing curves around the front and rear wheels. The "Thor's Hammer" lights and rear roof extension-that houses a high-mount stop light-seem to remain, but the roof-mounted LIDAR pod is gone. The rear fascia and taillights from the Precept (pictured below) also seem to remain largely the same, just flushed out for a realistic production design.
The door handles have also changed from the B-pillar area location to a more traditional location towards the rear of the doors, which also hints that the Lincoln Continental-style clamshell rear doors aren't making it to production; instead, they'll be conventionally hinged at the front. Keeping with the door area, the interesting angles of the lower doors and rocker panels on the Precept appear to remain on the new image of the 5. The wild looking side rear-view camera pods on the doors are replaced by a set of traditional outside rear-view mirrors. The large, panoramic roof also appears to have made it from the concept and reaches from the top of the front windshield all the way to the roof extension.
There isn't much we can tell about the interior, but it does look as if there will be a large, tablet-like center infotainment screen in the dashboard. It's somewhat hard to make out, but the distinct glow at the center of the dash is a dead giveaway. It also looks like the steering wheel will indeed be round.
Overall, it looks as if Nahum Escobedo, Exterior Design Manager at Polestar, will get his wish that the Polestar 5 in production reality will look very close to the imaginary concept of Polestar Precept.
