Warwick University stabbing: Attempted murder' of teenager at halls

Two teenagers have been arrested after a stabbing at Warwick University.

An 18-year-old man and a woman, 18, were detained on suspicion of attempted murder after the knifing at a halls of residence.

A 19-year-old man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries but his condition is not believed to be life-threatening.

Police, paramedics and an air ambulance descended on the Sherbourne block at the Russel Group university following the attack at around 4.30pm on Wednesday.

Social media footage showed armed police swooping on the 794-room halls before one of the men was dragged away in handcuffs.

An 18-year-old man from Kings Langley in Hertfordshire and an 18-year-old woman from London were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

A spokesman for Warwickshire Police said: 'Police were called at 4.32pm yesterday to reports that a man had been stabbed at a property in Scarman Road. Officers attended and found a 19-year-old man with stab wounds.

'He was taken to hospital where his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

'An 18-year-old man from Kings Langley, Hertfordshire and an 18-year-old woman from London have both been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.'

Detective Inspector Cawail Wong said: 'This was a serious incident in which a young man has suffered stab wounds. I would appeal to anyone with information about it to contact police.'

Warwick University said staff and students were not in danger and offered support for anyone affected.

It said in a statement: 'We want to reassure those concerned by a continued police presence around Sherbourne that there is no danger to students or staff.

'We can confirm an incident has taken place that has since concluded. Police officers remain on site as part of an investigation following the incident, as do members of Warwick staff.'

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: 'We were called to reports of a stabbing near to Gibbet Hill Road at 4.24pm yesterday.

'One ambulance, a paramedic officer and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance were sent to the scene.

'On arrival we discovered one male patient who was treated for serious injuries before being taken to hospital by land ambulance.

'The air crew travelled on the back of the ambulance to help continue treatment enroute to hospital.'
