Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg's newborn son is back home after undergoing medical treatment for several weeks.

Buttigieg's husband, Chasten Buttigieg, said Friday that the boy, Joseph (Gus) August, has returned home after "3 weeks in and out of hospitals, 125 miles in an ambulance, and a terrifying week on a ventilator."

"We're so relieved, thankful, and excited for him and Penelope to take DC by storm! Thank you so much for all of the love and prayers," he tweeted. "A special thank you to the countless medical professionals who helped Gus (and his dads and sister) along the way. We are so grateful for your tenderness and care."

Chasten Buttigieg also thanked everyone who shared stories from their stays in intensive care as children, saying those words were "so comforting during such a scary time."

And to everyone who posted stories from their NICU/ PICU stays, thank you so much for sharing with us. Those were so comforting during such a scary time. Thank you for helping us feel less-alone amidst all of the the anxiety and uncertainty.

Pete Buttigieg added that he was "thankful, relieved, and reflecting a great deal on the mixture of joy, terror, and love that is parenting."

The couple didn't disclose exactly what caused them to seek medical attention for their son.

However, Chasten Buttigieg said last Sunday that their family was spending Halloween at the hospital because Gus was "having a rough go of it," while adding he was "headed in the right direction."

The Buttigiegs adopted newborn twins Joseph and Penelope Rose in early September.

Pete Buttigieg recently returned from paternity leave that he took since August after adopting the children, sparking backlash from conservatives.

The transpiration secretary has defended himself amid the criticism, telling MSNBC's "Deadline: The White House" that it was "strange" he would get backlash from "a side of the aisle that used to claim the mantle of being pro-family."

"What we have right now is an administration that's actually pro-family," he added.
