McDonald's is reopening 1,088 restaurants in England and Wales today for inside dining - but customers will still have to follow coronavirus safety rules.

It comes as hospitality businesses have been allowed to welcome back customers for inside eating and drinking, as the next stage of the roadmap out of lockdown starts today, May 17.

Until now, restaurants and pubs have only been allowed to serve customers outside, apart from in Scotland where hospitality businesses can serve people inside but only until 8pm. Alcohol can also only be served outside.

McDonald's already has 97 restaurants open in Scotland for inside eating.

If you're planning on getting your Maccies fix today, we explain the rules you'll need to follow.

McDonald's has around 1,300 restaurants across the UK and Ireland.

Table service only

Like all other restaurants reopening for inside dining, McDonald's has confirmed it'll be operating table service only for those who are eating in.

This is to minimise the amount of people moving around the restaurant at one time.

To order via table service, you can either use the free My McDonald's app - we explain how this works below - or you can order your food at the self-service counters or till points.

Staff will then bring your food over to you, with all tables numbered so they can easily find you.

Order via the app if you can

McDonald's is encouraging all customers to order via its free app if they can - and says this is its preferred method for customers to pay.

The app allows you to go straight to your table and order food once you've sat down.

You'll need to choose your restaurant, then select "table service" when you go to order your food.

After this, you'll then be required to enter your table number so staff can find you.

But again, as we've mentioned above, there are still other ways to order if you don't have a smartphone.

There is still a limited menu

Maccies is still running a limited menu inside its restaurants, so some of your favourites might not be available.

Check the McDonald's website to see what's on offer before you visit.

But in better news, the fast food chain has just launched five new items including the Bacon Clubhouse Double Burger - but they'll only be around for a limited time.

You may have to queue

As only a limited number of people can dine in at one time, you may need to queue up outside your local McDonald's if it is at capacity.

The number of people allowed inside will vary depending on the size of the restaurant.

Staff will tell you when it is your turn to go inside and order.

Food may take longer

As fewer staff will be on shift, it may take slightly longer for your food to get to you.

McDonald's is asking customers to be patient and kind toward their staff.

Wear a mask

Customers need to wear a mask when ordering food to takeaway, or if you're moving around the restaurant.

But when you're sitting down eating your food, you won't need to wear a face covering.

Some people are exempt - people won't be required to wear a mask if they have a medical reason.

Follow one-way systems

Restaurants will still have a one-way system in place, which you'll need to follow as you enter and leave.

You'll notice there will be arrows on the floor that tell you which way you should go.

There are also boxes made out of tape on the floor to mark out where you should stand.
