Since the latest lockdown in January 2021, international travel has been banned and only passengers with essential reasons were allowed to travel abroad. From today, May 17, Britons are finally permitted to go on holiday, although they should keep the traffic light system in mind and be aware of the strict rules to follow in airports.

But what are the new measures and how different will your next visit to the airport be?

Perhaps the most important rule is the use of the face mask.

Once you get to the airport, you will be expected to wear a face covering and follow social distance rules at all times. Other new measures like sanitiser stations and perspex screens will also be in place.

Non-essential retail shops will finally reopen today, so passengers will be able to do their pre-flight shopping again.

However, travellers should bear in mind that because of the additional rules, things can take a bit longer. Queues should be expected at the airport, and passengers should get there with enough time.

The most important thing before going to the airport is making sure that you know how is your destination categorised.

The procedures to follow before getting to the airport depend on whether your destination is on the Green, Amber or Red list.

Countries determine their own health rules, so passengers should check the entry requirements when planning their trip.

A prove you have had a negative Covid-19 test before arriving at the country will be required for most destinations.

If so, you can book a private test or alternatively, you can have one at the airport.

Some airports like Stansted or Gatwick offer testing facilities and although they have to be booked in advance, they are usually much cheaper than regular Covid-19 tests.

Travellers that have had the two doses of the coronavirus vaccine will be able to demonstrate that in order to enter some countries.

They can use an app or a letter to prove that they are fully vaccinated.

From today May 17, passengers no longer need to complete the declaration form to travel abroad.

However, a passenger locator form will still need to be submitted upon return to the UK.

All travellers arriving back in the UK will need to show proof of a negative Covid test.

When coming back from a green country, a pre-departure test and an additional PCR test on the second day after arriving in the UK will need to be taken.

When arriving from green countries, no quarantine is required, unless they receive a positive test.

All tests must be booked and paid for in advance.

Regarding amber and red countries, people are being advised against going on holiday to those destinations.

However, if coming back from a medium risk country, a pre-departure test and PCR tests on day two and day eight after arriving in the UK will be mandatory.

Moreover, arrivals will need to quarantine for 10 days although the Test to Release will be available for those who want an early release from the isolation period.

The Government urged people not to travel for leisure to red countries, which are destinations with a high risk of Covid infection.
