UK Covid LIVE: Hugs, pubs and foreign holidays return as Coronavirus lockdown eases while police and Boris Johnson urge caution
Pubs and restaurants will be able to welcome customers back indoors, household visits will resume and a foreign holiday ban will end as lockdown eases in England today.
Hugs and other physical contact between households will be permitted for the first time since restrictions began more than a year ago. Boris Johnson has called for a "heavy dose of caution" as indoor socialising and physical contact resumes against the backdrop of concerns over the Indian coronavirus variant.
The Prime Minister said "now everyone must play their part", as England pushes ahead with the third stage of the road map out of lockdown on Monday.
The Metropolitan Police echoed his concerns. Deputy Assistant Commissioner, Jane Connors, the Met's lead for Covid-19, said "we are still in a critical phase of the pandemic" and that officers would take action to shut down large, illegal indoor gatherings.
