The Dallas Police Department arrested a man Saturday who allegedly killed a 4-year-old boy whose body was left lying in a neighborhood, the department said.

Police arrested the suspect Saturday and identified him as 18-year-old Darriynn Brown in a Sunday afternoon update. Authorities were alerted about a child dead in the street at roughly 6:50 a.m. Saturday after a witness discovered the body during a jog.

The boy was found in a Texas neighborhood near Saddleridge Dr. and Wood Homestead Dr., the department posted on social media. The department directed its search for the suspect toward a wooded trail not far from the deceased body by midafternoon Saturday, riding horseback into the area, according to the Dallas Morning News. Assistant Police Chief Albert Martinez told the outlet it appeared the child suffered a violent death and that "an edged weapon" was used, adding it was believed that the child was killed at approximately 5 a.m.

Antwainese Square, 39, told the outlet she called police after she saw the child's body on her run at approximately 6:40 a.m. She said the boy was shirtless and without shoes, adding that his face and the upper half of his body were covered in blood.

"It breaks my heart," Square said. "And now, I'm afraid. Now, I'm paranoid because I don't know what happened. I don't know what's going on."

Police believe the boy's family lives in the neighborhood. A parent of the child was notified, although it is unclear whether the child was reported as missing, according to KDFW.

Authorities blocked the entrance to the wooded area with crime-scene tape and encouraged anyone with information about the incident to call the police.
