Piers Morgan is to interview Labour leader Keir Starmer on ITV, two months after he quit the channel's flagship show Good Morning Britain in a row over Meghan Markle.

The broadcaster left the programme in March after casting doubt on the claims made by Meghan about her mental health in her and Prince Harry's bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey

His departure was followed by petitions signed by more than 360,000 people calling for him to be reinstated.

However, Mr Morgan will return to ITV's schedules to interview Sir Keir on his long-running Life Stories programme.

The programme will be filmed next month and will air on ITV later this year.

Announcing the interview, Mr Morgan said: 'It's very unusual for party political leaders to submit themselves to such lengthy personal interviews.

'I am delighted that Sir Keir has agreed to talk to me about his fascinating life.'

His past guests have included Simon Cowell, Sir Elton John and Sir Roger Moore.

The conversation with Sir Keir will mark the first time Mr Morgan has hosted a politician on his show since he interviewed the then Prime Minister Gordon Brown in 2010.

Sir Keir will reflect on his childhood growing up in Surrey, where he was the second of four children.

He will also talk of his career in law, which saw him rise to become Director of Public Prosecutions before he went into politics.

The politician will also talk about how he had to lead his party from his spare bedroom because of the restrictions imposed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Head of Entertainment at ITV, Katie Rawcliffe, said: 'Piers Morgan's Life Stories offers a detailed, personal look at some of the most famous characters around the globe.

'Piers is fantastic at getting people to open up about their lives, loves and losses. Sir Keir Starmer promises to be a real treat.'

Mr Morgan's departure from GMB brought to an end a six-year stint on the breakfast show, which he originally joined as a guest host in 2015.

After the show aired, an orchestrated social media campaign led to more than 41,000 complaints being made about Mr Morgan to broadcast regulator Ofcom.

Mr Morgan then stepped down from his lead presenting role after refusing to apologise for his remarks.
