Knives Out 2 was already an eagerly-awaited sequel after Rian Johnson's excellent first movie, but the cast announcements have taken that excitement to another level.

The sequel was first revealed to be in development in January 2020 following the huge success of Knives Out, which grossed more than $310 million worldwide and garnered widespread critical acclaim.

It was then confirmed in March 2021 that Netflix had picked up the rights to Knives Out 2 in a huge deal that also includes a third movie, with Daniel Craig set to reprise his role as private detective Benoit Blanc in both movies.

Before we get too far ahead of ourselves though, let's concentrate on Knives Out 2 which has started to reveal its incredible cast ahead of filming starting in June 2021.

Knives Out 2 cast: Who's joining Daniel Craig in Knives Out 2?

While Daniel Craig is returning as Benoit Blanc, Rian Johnson confirmed in February 2020 that the sequel will feature a "totally new cast".

Before you get too disappointed about the movie's excellent first cast - including Chris Evans, Ana de Armas and Jamie Lee Curtis - not coming back for the sequel, it looks like Johnson is compiling a cast that could well top the first movie. Yes, really.

The first name announced for the sequel was Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista, who has already spoken about being "really nervous" about the sequel, adding that the script is "brilliant".

"It's one of those things where now the pressure's on, because people are expecting things from you. I want to deliver. I take pride in that. I'm a game player. I want to throw a touchdown pass," he said.

Bautista has since been joined in the movie by fellow MCU stars Edward Norton and Kathryn Hahn, as well as Janelle Monáe. We don't know what their roles are yet, or indeed anything about the movie.

If we assume, however, that they're the potential victim and/or the suspects, it's only the start of the casting as the first movie had a large ensemble, with 10 members of the Thrombey family alone.

We can't wait to see what other names join the sequel after this opening salvo.

Jamie Lee Curtis jokingly responded to the lack of returns for the Thrombey family in the sequel by offering up an update on their lives since the first movie.

"To clear up any rumors, the family is in family counseling and the therapist suggested they stay away from Benoit Blanc in the future," she explained.

"Linda was fine as she kicked her loafer-wearing prick of a husband to the curb. The rest of them are hustling. Ransom is apparently in the knitting-sweater business, a new skill he picked up in the slammer. Joni has some vaginal scented bath bomb, Walt is self-publishing his memoir."

Ana de Armas hasn't given up hope of appearing in the sequel though as she said in October 2020: "I hope this is one of those surprises that 2021 will bring for me, a phone call from Rian."

Knives Out 2 release date: When will Knives Out 2 be released on Netflix?

We don't yet have a confirmed release date for Knives Out 2, but we do know that filming will begin in Greece on June 28.

The first movie filmed from October-December 2018 ahead of its release in cinemas on November 27, 2019, having premiered at Toronto International Film Festival in September 2019.

A similar time scale could point to a 2022 release on Netflix, perhaps in the late November slot that worked well for the first movie. It's unclear yet if the sequel will also be released in cinemas.

As soon as we have a confirmed release date, we'll let you know.

Knives Out 2 trailer: Any Knives Out 2 footage yet?

We don't have any footage yet of Knives Out 2, but we'd hope that when filming starts, we might get some first-looks at the cast in action. That might just be wishful thinking on our part though.

Otherwise, we probably won't see any footage from the movie until some point in 2022.

Knives Out is available now on 4K Ultra-HD, Blu-ray and DVD, as well as on Prime Video, iTunes and other digital platforms.
