David Luiz will leave Arsenal at the end of the season after both parties decided not to enter into talks over a new contract.

In a meeting with senior Arsenal figures on Friday, it was decided Luiz's current deal would be his last as both club and player look to the future.

Luiz has previously spoken of both coaching and a return to former club Benfica, while Arsenal have younger defenders such as William Saliba to integrate into the first-team squad.

The defender joined Arsenal from Chelsea two years ago and, despite a number of high-profile errors, has been a consistent performer and big influence on Mikel Arteta's side.

However, both player and club will part ways in the summer with Arsenal insisting they have the utmost respect for the departing defender.

Luiz, who is currently injured, is now focused on making at least one final appearance for the club. He has been out of action since coming off during the win at Newcastle with a hamstring issue.

The Brazilian has been working hard to get fit since then and is hoping to feature against Crystal Palace or Brighton next week.

The 34-year-old has battled with fitness issues throughout the campaign and had to undergo knee surgery earlier this year.
