A heavy police presence and a large number of vehicles have been spotted on the B6415 (Joppa Road) near the junction with the Promenade.

Officers confirmed the report of an item, but added that it was found to be non-suspcious.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers in Edinburgh received a report of a possible unexploded ordinance found on Portobello beach around 12.30pm on Friday, 15 May.

"A cordon was put in place, and there was no wider risk to the public.

"Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) attended to check the item which was found to be non-suspicious."
