An old face re-enters the League of Legends scene with NRG's acquisition of GAM Esports.
GAM Esports is the defending champion of the Vietnamese VCS and has been acquired by North American organization NRG together with the Vietnamese entertainment company CMG.ASIA. Acquiring GAM Esports is the first move by the newly formed NRG Asia project and it's expected that the organization will provide quality training facilities and infrastructure to the team.
NRG won't only be back in League of Legends but will be re-entering with style. By acquiring GAM Esports, NRG will now be in charge of possibly the best Vietnamese LoL organization in history. The team has been among the best in the VCS since 2017. Since rebranding to GAM Esports in 2018, the team has won two VCS trophies and finished second in the two others.
GAM Esports qualified for the 2019 World Championship where the team impressed with its aggressive playstyle. GAM Esports also qualified for the 2020 World Championship and most recently the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational, but hasn't been able to attend any of those events due to travel restrictions.
It's expected that GAM Esports will continue to be a dominant frontrunner in the VCS, giving NRG a golden opportunity to be represented at the 2021 World Championship if everything goes as planned.
NRG is back in LoL after LCS relegation in 2016
The last time the NRG name was present in the LoL scene was in 2016. During the 2016 season, NRG participated in the NA LCS with players such as Jeong "Impact" Eon-young, Lee "GBM" Chang-seok, and other known players. The team finished fifth in its first split but was relegated during the summer split at the hands of Echo Fox. NRG ceased its operations in LoL from there.
GAM Esports will be back on Summoner's Rift when the 2021 VCS Summer Split kicks off, this time with NRG Asia on their jerseys.
