Meghan Markle cemented her status as a fashion icon when she joined the Royal Family, but since moving to the US, she's setting new trends - with her garden furniture.

Clothing and jewellery brands favoured by the Duchess, 39, often see her items of choice sell out within hours of her wearing them in public, and it appears the 'Markle Sparkle' is spreading to interiors.

Last week the Duchess of Sussex, 39, announced she is releasing a new children's book on June 8 called The Bench, inspired by a poem she had written for Harry on Father's Day the month after their son Archie, now two, was born.

Days later she made a television appearance in aid of Vax Live in which she on discussed the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on women, while sitting on the bench believed to be the star of her literature debut.

According to Google Trends, people searching the Google Shopping term 'bench' almost doubled on May 5, when news of Meghan's children's book broke, and again on May 8, which coincided with her Vax Live TV appearance.

It comes after the Christopher Knight patio chairs that Harry and Meghan sat on during their explosive Oprah Winfrey interview quickly sold out.

Popular culture expert Nick Ede told FEMAIL that the Meghan Effect is so powerful that literally everything she touches sells out.

'She has this power as so many people want to emulate her style and this doesn't just stop at fashion, this is lifestyle, like a new era Martha Stewart,' he said.

'Meghan has the power to sell products which is every brand's dream. The fact that she can shift sales of garden benches shows that her brand equity is huge, and has the power to shift everyday objects - even coffee.'

Following the Sussexes' Oprah interview, house buffs were left clambering over themselves to get their hands on the Christopher Knight Home Burchett outdoor club chairs on which they sat, which retail at around £400 for a pair.

Many were left disappointed as the US designer's chairs, made from acacia wood with plastic rattan sides, sold out everywhere - including Amazon, Target and Overstock.com.

Christopher Knight himself took to Facebook, writing: 'I am honoured to have the patio chairs from my collection become the seat of the most fascinating famous sit down in recent history. It would appear Meghan and Prince Harry got "Knighted" in a way never anticipated.'

While the designer of their garden bench - on which they also appeared during a video urging people to vote in the US elections last year - is yet to be identified, there are a number of lookalike options available online.
